been away.

yeah, i've been away for awhile. my 10-day free trial expired and then there was Christmas. i've been busy with a new Xbox 360 (playing ESIV: Oblivion). I intend to sit down and write a synopsis of my thoughts on WoW. until then, play on.

Warrior - lvl 12

I'm soooo tired of this game right now. this isn't specific to WoW though...i get like this with Guild Wars too. I'm just tired of the grinding and continuous questing for random stuff.

and on WoW right now, i sure wish i had some henchmen or friends to help me out.

Realms vs. Districts

so everything i read on 'realms' is that unless you want to spend $25 every month to move your character once you make him, he's stuck there. the idea i'm getting from this is that in order to play in a group with your friends, you all have to have characters on the same realm.

this may be the normal thing for MMORPGs but i'm used to Guild Wars where anyone can meet up with anyone and form a party to play together. in GW, your characters are all stored somewhere and when you log on you appear inside a town/outpost. each outpost is instanced into multiple districts (where necessary). so say i've been playing for awhile and a friend logs on. He can tell me he's in Ascalon in district 3 and then i can just join him there to form a group. GW adds districts as the number of players get larger so that the districts don't get overwhelmed.

Full Realm

Misha is full, again.
Postition in queue: 223.

Talents

reading up on posts...
http://www.wowwiki.com/Talent

Warrior - lvl 10

yay...i can develop talents now.

so what are those?
once i play some more i'll come back to tell.

Professions

so as not to be biased:

today i have been running around completing quests, gaining XP, yay.
i also have been gathering stringy strips of leather and then forming them into 'light leather', and item with which i can make other things. i have developed my profession of skinning and also of leatherworking. i can definitely say that WoW is way deeper in realism than GW is.

sometimes i think that all this other useless crap (i.e. skinning and leatherworking) takes away from the actual missions and quests of the game. and sometimes, like just now, i feel that the professions of WoW add to the depth, realism, and playability of WoW.

I think that which game one plays will come down to whether one is looking for a game or looking for a virtual world in which to escape.

Warrior - lvl 9

Retribution Aura vs. Retribution

haha...just got my but kicked by Redmunday. She was enchanted by 'Retribution Aura: Does 10 Holy damage to anyone who strikes you.' sounds an awful lot like Guild Wars's spell 'Retribution: Enchantment Spell. Deals 33% of each attack's damage (maximum 5...17...20) back to the source.'.

Mac Client

just woke up and realized how much i enjoy using one OS for everything. I was so used to switching from MacOSX into XP in bootcamp in order to play Guild Wars. Using WoW, i don't have to switch because their is a mac client.

Full Realm again!

so my home realm of Misha is full again...arghhhh! But I don't think I should really hold this against them because someone commented today that Misha is the trial account server. I want to check into that...but I am playing with non-trial account players, so i wonder how true that is.

BUT, i do have one pet peeve. I was notified that i was number x in the queue but over the last few minutes i've been moving down the list as much as moving up....so what's the point of standing in line if i don't get in when the people in front of me are gone???

Warrior - lvl 8

Warrior - lvl 7

i'm definitely camping out more in this game looking for the right things to spawn so i can kill x of x.

Play Summary

so i'm not addicted. i'm not even that focused on what i'm doing most of the time. i really like the fishing. mostly i'm bored. there are no henchmen to stick in my party with me, and since i have noone else to group with i'm soloing all the time. i'm just used to doing missions with backup.

let's see...if 80 is to 20 then 6 is to...'1 1/2'. by that math, i may have leveled up to 6 tonight on my priest, but relative to GW that's only '1.5' levels. which sounds about like what I would expect to level up after playing for a few hours on a new character in GW.

(in case you don't know Guild Wars characters max out at level 20 and WoW characters max out at level 80)

Priest - lvl 6

Priest - lvl 5

Priest - lvl 4

Priest - lvl 3

since i've been on...a few minutes, i've leveled up twice...yay!

oh, and i will eventually get my level titles in some sort of standard.

Full Realm???

so i finally got internet back again and started to logon tonight...my realm was full. WTF??

so how many ppl logged on that my realm was all of a sudden full??? And why do I have to wait to play just because my realm was full? Why can't I take my character to another realm and play? But no...I had to change realms and then create a new character. 'oh bother' !

Warrior - lvl 5

Respawn

i find myself, more often than not, clicking and waiting in WoW. I believe this is mostly because in GW my characters are mostly maxed out now and i have to focus more on strategy than just click and wait.

but i really love this respawn part of WoW...no zoning out and back in to get those x of x things i need. by the time i'm done killing the last one the first one is respawning. great time saver.

LvL 4

I just thought it might be nice to record when I level up.

General thoughts while playing

Daniel pointed out the different skill tree used by WoW. Guild Wars uses skill points that can be rearranged while in an outpost/town allowing a character to adjust which skills he/she is most proficient in. so far I don't know much about the WoW skill tree yet, but I have realized that when I get better at using a sword I can't reapportion that skill point to maces, or axes or whatever. it seems then that in order to get better at axes i must spend hours getting better at axes....and then if i change my mind and decide to use a sword i must spend hours getting better at swords. i'm used to GW where I can quickly switch according to which strategy i will be using.

first impression

i've been playing for a few hours total now. i just realized that WoW is like Elder Scrolls V: Oblivion. I absolutlely loved ESIV: Morrowwind on Xbox so i splurged and bought Oblivion for computer (even though i can't play it because the integrated graphics card isn't good enough). as i was running through the town looking for someone to complete a quest at i thought that this would be better to have a directional arrow like GW. i then started comparing all the games i know that have quest arrows vs. those that don't. that's when i realized WoW is just MMOOblivion....

everyone is the hero, everyone can go anywhere, you have to spend countless hours leveling up, you try to pick everything up (at least for awhile), but maybe there isn't a main storyline.

purpose

I intend to try out WoW. I will post my general impressions of WoW and also compare and contrast it to Guild Wars (and any other game i feel like).

I know that this has been done on many forums, but I feel (from reading these forums) that the people writing the posts on the forums are generally out to 'stick up' for their game. I admit my bias toward GW, as that is the game I started out on, but I hope to develop an appreciation for WoW in order to balance that bias.
